How much does propane cost in France?
With propane you pay for the gas itself, but also for several recurring costs you should know about before signing up. In 2026, a tonne of propane in France ranges from roughly €1,700 to €4,400 including tax, averaging about €2,400. On top of that come tank installation, maintenance and delivery, which vary widely from one supplier to the next.
Annual tank subscription and maintenance
Because propane is flammable, tanks must be inspected and serviced regularly, so most suppliers fold a maintenance fee into your annual subscription. The table below compares the annual subscription charged by the main suppliers and what it includes.
| Supplier / Offer | Annual price | What the subscription includes |
|---|---|---|
| Antargaz Visipack | 150 € | Tank provided, maintenance & servicing, connected gauge |
| Butagaz Optimo | 174 € (underground) / 114 € (above-ground) | Tank provided, maintenance & servicing |
| Primagaz Prim'Eazy First | 144 € | Tank installation, rental, periodic inspection & requalification, metered billing |
| Repsol | 40.8 € (above-ground) | Maintenance & servicing |
| Vitogaz Vitozeco | 312.47 € (underground) / 269.36 € (above-ground) | Tank rental; maintenance +600.92 € |

Propane delivery fees
When propane is delivered to your tank by truck, extra charges may apply depending on how deliveries are managed. With supplier-managed (automatic) delivery, the supplier monitors your tank level and refills it when needed, usually free of charge. With customer-managed (on-demand) delivery, you order when you choose, which is flexible but can add fees, especially in winter. Some suppliers also set minimum order sizes or higher per-tonne rates for small deliveries.

Termination and tank removal fees
Unlike an electricity or gas contract, ending a propane tank contract can involve several charges: a tank removal fee, a fee for pumping out leftover gas, and sometimes an early-termination penalty. The table below compares tank removal costs for underground and above-ground tanks.

Propane bottle prices
With propane bottles you pay for the gas, plus a one-time deposit for the bottle itself, called a consigne in French. This deposit (usually between €1 and €50 depending on size and brand) lets you use the supplier's cylinder, which remains their property. After that, you simply swap your empty bottle for a full one and pay only for the refill. Refill prices vary significantly by bottle size and supplier.
| Bottle size | Antargaz | Butagaz | Primagaz | Vitogaz |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small bottle | Butane 24.35 € Propane 27.95 € | Butane 23.95 € Propane 23.95 € | Butane 22.9 € Propane 22.9 € | — |

How to choose the right propane contract
With bottles you simply pay per bottle in store. With a tank contract you can be billed in two ways: per amount of gas delivered (you pay for each delivery, which suits on-demand deliveries), or per consumption (a meter on your tank tracks usage and the supplier bills you monthly, which suits automatic deliveries). Choosing a delivery method follows the same logic:
Automatic delivery
Your supplier schedules refills from your usage history and the weather forecast. Usually the cheapest and safest option, you never run out.
On-demand delivery
You order when you need gas. Can be cheaper for sporadic use, but you must watch your level, a good rule is to reorder at around 20% of tank capacity.
Whatever you choose, get clear answers to these questions before you sign any propane contract:
- what is the supplier's full price list (gas, refills, deposit), and can you get a discount;
- can prices change, and if so are you protected against increases;
- for a tank: how much does installation cost, and is maintenance included in the monthly price;
- how much would early cancellation cost (termination, gas removal, tank removal);
- what payment methods are available;
- does the contract tie you to the supplier for a minimum period, and for how long.
Frequently asked questions
Usually no. Propane delivered to a tank costs more per kWh than mains natural gas, because of delivery, tank rental and maintenance. It mainly makes sense when your home cannot be connected to the gas grid, where it competes with heating oil and electricity rather than mains gas.
Tank contracts in France can lock you in for several years, sometimes up to 9 years. Always read the term and the early-termination charges before signing, as removing the tank and pumping out leftover gas can cost well over a thousand euros.
Bottles suit low or occasional use (cooking, a single appliance): you pay a one-off deposit then buy refills. A tank suits whole-home heating: you pay for installation or rental, maintenance and the gas itself, with deliveries scheduled automatically or on demand.
